Graduate Recruitment Scheme
Hints and Tips
Approach your university and ask for a copy of your academic transcript so you have all the documentation required to apply. This can sometimes take a few days so it helps to do it with plenty of time to spare.Be punctual for appointments.Come and talk to us when we are at your university. We take part in careers fairs and information sessions across Victoria. We also run workshops on addressing selection criteria and the recruitment process.Don’t leave your application until the last minute. Familiarise yourself with what is required and make time to think about how you will respond. If you leave things until the last minute, you mightn’t be able to focus on the quality of your responses.Familiarise yourself with the Victorian Public Service websites (www.careers.vic.gov.au; www.graduates.vic.gov.au) as well as departmental websites. These will provide you with an idea of how the VPS is structured and the variety it offers.Get somebody to proofread your application! Remember that a computer spell checker may not recognise words that are out of context or incomplete answers.Print out a copy of the application form so you can complete drafts before completing the online application.Remember, if you don’t have any work experience, you may have developed skills in community or volunteer groups such as cultural groups, religious groups, university organisations or sports groups. When you are answering behavioural questions in your application, give real life examples. It may be helpful to use the STAR approach. When talking about your past work experience in your application, outline the skills you developed and provide examples.
