Formal training programs

The Graduate Recruitment and Development Scheme offers graduates a program of formal training during the course of the year. This training program assists your development from entry level (VPS Grade 2) to the next level (VPS Grade 3).

The training program comprises:

Entry to government

This course provides a practical understanding of the structures and processes of the Victorian State Government. This course develops your understanding of the diverse roles and functions of departments and agencies. It also orientates you to your own role and level of accountability.

Writing for government

This course helps you identify the audience and purpose for your writing. It develops your planning and organising skills and gives strategies to help you write in a clear and concise style.

An overview of some basic forms of government writing (including briefs, emails and correspondence) is provided.

Team building

This program provides you with an understanding of how people differ in their motivation, attitudes and aspirations, and the behavioural differences that may result.

The information you gain from developing your own behavioural style profile will assist you to better understand your own behaviour and the behaviour of others in the workplace.

Public policy

This course helps you to understand the contemporary context for public sector policy development.

You will learn how to:
  • define the public policy environment globally, nationally, locally and from within your department
  • describe the political environment from which policies emerge
  • describe the process of turning legislation into policy
  • develop strategies to keep abreast of political changes and developments as they occur
  • develop skills to link ideology and implementation
  • describe critically how policy impacts on the environment in which you work.

Career planning

This full-day workshop is an opportunity to reflect on your learning over the year. It’s also an opportunity to identify your work preferences and plan your ongoing career in the Victorian Government.

The training consists of a self-assessment exercise where you reflect on your own learning and development, a session showing how your learning and development experiences can be incorporated into your professional development plan, and a discussion of your skills, experiences, work preferences and career aspirations.

Project management

This course equips graduates with the fundamentals of project management principles, covering the importance of project management in government, probity management, budget approval process, risk management and governance.
